EMERGE also has as one of its objectives to connect with the other participants in the EIC Pathfinder Challenge "Awareness Inside" to ensure a synergistic development of the projects, supporting cross-project collaboration and contaminations, and ensuring active participation in portfolio initiatives. Portfolio activities are described below.
1. Workshop “Inside the Ethics of AI Awareness”
The workshop “Inside the Ethics of AI Awareness” took place in Brussels on September 20th, 2023, and gathered representatives of various EIC-funded projects and presents an opportunity for philosophers, computer scientists, roboticists and other experts to contribute to a nuanced understanding of ethical concerns surrounding artificial systems.
2. First open meeting of the portfolio of projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge “Awareness Inside“
The meeting took place on October 1st, 2023, in Kraków, Poland, during the 26th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2023).
3. Workshop “Designing Aware Robots: The EIC Pathfinder Challenge - Explore Awareness Inside”
The event was held during the 2024 edition of the European Robotics Forum, in Rimini, Italy, on March 13th – 15th, 2024. The workshop focused on the intriguing intersection of robotics and awareness and will be a platform for exchanging groundbreaking ideas and insights into the role of awareness within robotic systems.
4. Second Workshop “Inside the Ethics of AI Awareness”
The workshop took place in Uppsala, Sweden, on November 11, 2024, discussed the ethical implications of designing aware artificial intelligent systems.
5. Workshop Awareness in Artificial Agents
EMERGE and VALAWAI projects organised this event during the Biennale in Venice, Italy, on 6-8 September, 2025, to reflect on the nature of awareness through science, technology and art.
6. Workshop on Awareness in Learning Agents (ALA 2025)
The workshop framed within the context of the “Awareness Inside” portfolio explores both the technical advancements provided by awareness and the philosophical, ethical, and societal impacts and implications of aware agents. It was hosted by the 2025 ECAI Conference on 25-30 October 2025 in Bologna, Italy
