EMERGE coordinator Davide Bacciu was interviewed by the Italian website "AI news" in which he talks about artificial intelligence, artificial awareness, and the EMERGE project.(AIN) Let’s start with a preliminary question: What is artificial intelligence?
(DB) It’s a question that we have given a somewhat evasive answer to. We define artificial intelligence for comparison with the human intelligence, because the most difficult thing is to define what intelligence is. We can describe artificial intelligence as that area of computer science that develops models whose behaviours are, from a decision-making point of view and with reference to the tasks they are able to solve, indistinguishable from the functions performed by a human. This is a definition very close to that of Turing and recognised by the entire scientific community. For me, AI is that area of computer science that brings the machine closer to the human and that tries to work on the barrier that exists between the physical and cyber biological worlds, making it possible for the human being to interact with the machine in a natural way and making it easier for the machine to understand the physical world and the human being. Artificial intelligence is the future of the interaction between the physical world of people and the cybernetic world of the machine.
